Born on a Battlefield

By Skip Heitzig

I didn't like getting in fights as a kid. I got in few of them, but I didn't like it. I did, however, have an older brother named Bob (one of three others) who was handy to have around. Though I'm pretty tall (I turned out to be 6' 5"), my brother was a Goliath at 6' 8".So when I was in my formative years, not quite 6' 5" yet, I loved it when I could know that Bob was close by, ready to fight for me if need be.

An Apostolic Boxing Match

By Skip Heitzig

How should a Christian handle conflict? What should a believer do when it comes to criticism? In short, how do you get people to disagree agreeably?

The final paragraph of Acts 15 gives us some insight into that. The Bible doesn't flatter its heroes, and I'm glad for that, because we witness a very human moment in this chapter--a boxing match of sorts between two apostles of the earl...

The Real Wonder Bread

By Skip Heitzig

I think it's safe to say that we love to eat. One of the biggest industries in the U.S. is the food industry--eateries, restaurants, cafes, bistros. I find it interesting that the Bible, and even Christ Himself, so often used food analogies. Jesus must know that we love to eat!

Well, imagine living off a bread that tastes incredible, makes daily life wonderful, saves you, secures you, ma...

Lessons in Legacy

By Skip Heitzig

Life doesn't come with a warm-up round or a dress rehearsal. You just have to deal with whatever comes at you and make your choices before it's all over. And when it is over, an obituary will be written about you, whether you like it or not. What will it have to say? What kind of a legacy and testimony are you going to leave behind?

In Exodus 2, we see the example of Moses...

The Future Never Looked Better

By Skip Heitzig

If you were to summarize the way you view your future, what would you say? For the apostle Paul, he would without a doubt cite Philippians 1:21: "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

Now, Paul wrote that (and the entire book of Philippians) while a prisoner in Rome. This little motto served as the lens through which he viewed his uncertain future...

Prayer Is a Partnership

By Skip Heitzig

Hebrews 1:2 tells us that God "has in these last days spoken to us by His Son," Jesus Christ. Yet some people want God to talk to them like He did in the Old Testament. I remember being a new believer and taking a pad of paper, a pencil, and a staff--yes, a staff--up a mountain, where I proceeded to sit for the longest time, like Moses, waiting for God to say something. He never did. Yet since then, I have had a ...

Faith, Not Fear

By Skip Heitzig

In a season when many people are worried about the future of our country, I think it's time for you to get practical about your own future. The truth is, one day will be your last day on earth, and then what? What about eternity? If you're a believer, you'll live forever with the Lord in heaven. But is that truth being reflected in how you're living right now?

Let's read the words of the apost...

Do You Want More?

By Skip Heitzig

C.S. Lewis once wrote, "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased."1

In Numbers 32, the children of Israel were on the verge of entering the Promised ...

Wanted: True Worshipers

By Skip Heitzig

One Sunday night, a little boy was being tucked in to bed when he shocked his parents by praying, "Dear God, thank You for church today. We had such a great time, but, boy, I wish You could've been there!" Now, why would he say that? Truth be told, some churches have become so obsessed with being relevant that they seem to worship their culture rather than God. But for the believer, there is no higher calling and...
